African Giraffe-Nosed Catfish (Auchenoglanis occidentalis)

Overview

The African Giraffe-Nosed Catfish is a unique freshwater species, easily recognized by its elongated “giraffe-like” snout and streamlined body. A peaceful bottom-dweller, it uses its sensitive barbels to forage for food, adding activity and interest to community tanks.

Origin

Native to West and Central Africa, inhabiting rivers, streams, and floodplain areas with sandy or muddy substrates and submerged vegetation.

Feeding

Omnivorous. Accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), live foods, and plant matter. Prefers to feed along the substrate using its distinctive snout to root out food.

Tank Mates

Peaceful toward similarly sized fish. Compatible with medium to large community species, including peaceful cichlids, barbs, and rainbowfish. Avoid very small fish that may be seen as prey.

Aggression

Low. Non-territorial and generally shy, prefers hiding areas and subdued lighting.

Experience Level

Intermediate. Requires a spacious tank with soft substrate, hiding spots, and stable water conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5

  • Hardness: 5 – 15 dGH

  • Notes: Provide sand or fine gravel substrate, driftwood, and plants for shelter. Gentle water flow is preferred to replicate natural habitat.

Unique, peaceful, and fascinating, the African Giraffe-Nosed Catfish (Auchenoglanis occidentalis) is ideal for aquarists seeking an unusual, active bottom-dwelling centerpiece for African freshwater aquariums.
