This species should be kept in a larger tank of at least 4ft for a single pair. Convicts are quite an aggressive cichlid, especially when breeding. They will not hesitate to take on fish substantially larger than themselves when protecting eggs or fry and for this reason they are best kept in a species only set up. Though other central american cichlids can be housed with the convicts, few people have had success in the long term, so plan carefully before committing.
