The Freshwater Pearl Stingray, scientifically known as Potamotrygon Jabuti, is a highly prized species in the aquarium hobby for its stunning appearance and unique behavior. Characterized by its distinctive pearl-like spots across a dark backdrop, this species adds an exotic touch to any freshwater aquarium. With a disc-shaped body and a long, slender tail, the Freshwater Pearl Stingray is an enchanting sight as it glides gracefully along the bottom of its aquatic home.
Origin:
Native to the river basins of South America, particularly in Brazil, the Freshwater Pearl Stingray thrives in slow-moving rivers and streams. Its natural habitat is marked by sandy or muddy bottoms where it can blend in and hunt for food.
Feeding:
A carnivorous species, the Freshwater Pearl Stingray requires a diet rich in meaty foods. In captivity, they can be fed a variety of foods including bloodworms, earthworms, shrimp, and pieces of fish. It is important to ensure a varied diet to maintain their health and vitality.
Tank Mates:
Choosing the right tank mates for the Freshwater Pearl Stingray is crucial to its well-being. Suitable companions include peaceful, large-bodied fish that dwell in the upper parts of the water column. Avoid small, aggressive, or fin-nipping species as they can stress or harm the stingray. Good tank mates include larger characins, peaceful cichlids, and catfish.
Aggression:
The Freshwater Pearl Stingray is generally peaceful towards other tank inhabitants but can become territorial with other bottom-dwellers. It’s important to monitor interactions and provide ample space for each individual to establish its territory.
Experience Level:
Due to their specific care requirements and sensitivity to water quality, the Freshwater Pearl Stingray is recommended for advanced aquarium hobbyists. Proper tank setup, regular maintenance, and a commitment to providing a suitable diet are essential for their care.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- Hardness: 5-12 dGH
- Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
A well-maintained tank with soft, sandy substrate and plenty of hiding spots is ideal. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are crucial to keep these magnificent creatures healthy. Due to their size and need for space, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with larger accommodations necessary for multiple individuals or tank mates.
