Overview:
The King Kong Kohaku Parrot Fish is a premium hybrid cichlid inspired by the famous Kohaku koi pattern, featuring a creamy white base adorned with bold red-orange patches across the body and head. A cross between the Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and Vieja melanurus, this fish combines the rounded body and interactive personality of parrot cichlids with the strong patterning and robust build of Vieja species.
Origin:
A fully captive-bred hybrid developed for the ornamental aquarium trade. Parent species originate from Central America, where they inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, and floodplains.
Feeding:
Omnivorous and easy to feed. Accepts high-quality cichlid pellets as a staple diet, with regular supplements of frozen or live foods such as krill, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Include vegetable-based foods like spirulina flakes, blanched spinach, or zucchini for health and color enhancement.
Tank Mates:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust Central/South American cichlids, large catfish, or armored plecos. Avoid small or timid species. Can be housed with other parrot cichlids in spacious tanks with plenty of hiding places.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
pH: 6.8–7.8
Hardness: Medium to hard water
Minimum Tank Size: 55+ gallons for a single; larger for mixed setups
Provide rocks, caves, and open swimming space
Behavior & Personality:
Intelligent and personable—often interacts with keepers
Can display moderate aggression, especially during spawning attempts
May form bonded pairs, though hybrid fertility is often reduced
Special Notes:
Highly sought-after for its koi-like color pattern
Long lifespan—often 10–15 years with good care
Avoid overfeeding to prevent obesity
A carotenoid-rich diet will enhance red-orange pigmentation
The King Kong Kohaku Parrot Fish brings the elegance of koi-inspired markings to a bold, engaging hybrid cichlid, making it a centerpiece fish for large, well-maintained aquariums.
