The Black Avatar Angelfish is a striking freshwater angelfish variant featuring a deep black body with subtle iridescence. Graceful and commanding, it adds dramatic contrast to community aquariums while displaying the curiosity and personality typical of angelfish.
Native to the Amazon Basin in South America. This “Black Avatar” is a selectively bred variant for the aquarium hobby, prized for its dark coloration.
Omnivorous. Thrives on high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and occasional live foods. A varied diet enhances health and maintains rich body colouration.
Compatible with peaceful or moderately sized tank mates, including tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid very small fish that may be eaten or aggressive fin-nippers.
Moderate. Can be territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept with plenty of space, hiding spots, and either in pairs or small groups.
Intermediate. Requires stable water conditions and some experience with angelfish husbandry.
Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Hardness: 3 – 12 dGH
Notes: Provide vertical plants, driftwood, and open swimming space for optimal well-being.
Elegant, dramatic, and hardy, the Black Avatar Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a visually striking centerpiece for South American-themed freshwater aquariums.
